CANVA: An Experiment in Graphic Design
I was recently introduced to the world of “Canva” a graphic design made easy. It places hundreds of graphics, fonts, and themes literally (I was using a touch screen to work with it) at your fingertips. As a novice to the art world and in turn a novice to graphic design, the application was not too difficult to pick up. There is about a minute long walk through on the app the first time you open it up. It takes you through the basic features and shows you just how far the platform will allow your creativity to go. The tutorial has you putting hats on monkeys, how much more creative and outlandish do you hope to get? To the left, you can see one of my earliest experiences with the app. The quotation is from one of my favorite professors, Laura Tiejen.

As a teacher, I can see this tool being used to show my students who I am and where I stand. Motivational quotations can find their way onto my walls in a clean and professional manner. While plain walls can find a splash of color. Secondary to creating a presence and ambiance in my classroom, I can save some money on classroom decoration by using the school’s printing and designing the posters myself. As teachers, doesn’t that sound appealing?
This app gets an A+ from this teacher and it definitely gets my recommendation.
If you are interested in checking out this app for yourself and trying your hand at some graphic design, you can find a link to the iOS compatible version, here.
Unfortunately, there is not a version available for devices using the Android OS.
